You’ve probably asked your web master, business consultant and friends that question at least once.  You probably got a different answer from each one of them and are still confused.  Here are some stats from YouTube:

  • More than 1 billion unique users visit YouTube each month
  • Over 6 billion hours of video are watched each month on YouTube—that’s almost an hour for every person on Earth, and 50% more than last year
  • 100 hours of video are uploaded to YouTube every minute
  • 70% of YouTube traffic comes from outside the US
  • YouTube is localized in 56 countries and across 61 languages
  • According to Nielsen, YouTube reaches more US adults ages 18-34 than any cable network
  • Millions of subscriptions happen each day, and the number of people subscribing has more than doubled since last year

Should Your Business Create a YouTube Video?

Business YouTube Video Production - Laptop and Mobile

Answer:  Probably.  With 6 billion hours of video watched every month, your 90 second video has opportunity.  However, just like your website content, your video must be produced with your target audience in mind.

1)  Solve the visitor’s problem.

Most small business videos are ignored because they have a single, static view of the owner talking about themselves.   While you may think your story is compelling in person, it does not have the same impact via video.  Create a compelling video about the solution you visitor is looking for.

2)  Keep consistent with your personal brand.

Too often a business owner will pay for a slick video production that doesn’t look anything like their actual business.  This is commonly called bait-and-switch.  If your business is boring AND successful, then make your video appeal to the audience you are already successful at reaching.  Now if your business is boring and going broke, then lets talk further.

3)  Multiple beats single, every time.

Just like every other marketing method, video marketing takes time and multiple impressions to have any impact.  Don’t make the mistake of producing one video and measuring success or failure.  Set an objective to produce one video per month for 6 months (at least) and then measure effectiveness.

Getting Started with your First Business Video Production

You are not in the video production business, although you probably could make a video that could work well on YouTube.  Windows and MAC both now come with video editing software that even a novice like you can use to product good videos that can connect with your target audience.  The trick is organization and keep it legal.

Business Video Production Happens on Purpose

Great videos are planned, scripted, and heavily edited.  No one take wonders out there.  You must write it down, re-organize your message, and then memorize your script.

Protect Your Legal Reputation

Video of you will always be legal, but the music you probably use will be copy protected.  Grabbing clips from the internet of might-mouse, bugs bunny or Bruce Willis in Die Hard is illegal and will reflect poorly on you and your business.  Purchase the clips, photos and music you need to build the necessary excitement in your viewer.
